#DearCinnaMoms Jun 21'

And just like that, another month has passed us by. I turn the page on my imaginary wall calendar now that our phones do it for us; I don’t even worry about daylight savings anymore. Weeks like days, days like hours and here we are, at the seventh month of the year with Thanksgiving just around the corner.

Hold it! Before we start thinking about stuffing and pumpkin pies, can we take a moment to celebrate the fact that

June Nineteenth has officially been recognized as a federal holiday?

Celebrate*

We celebrate a day 156 years in the making, and though it happened “a long time ago,” we continue the fight for equity. While the Emancipation Proclamation may have been signed on January 1st, 1863 slavery and segregation did not end there. Unfortunately, systems of racism and oppression did not end in 1863.

We will continue the work to move forward and onward to help build a better tomorrow for ourselves and our posterity. For a place where we can feel safe and proud to call home.

The Celebration Continues

As more vaccination opportunities continue to become available, Californians are taking advantage of the increased access to become vaccinated and return the state to a version of its former self. Our families continue to reunite and who knows? Maybe someday in the not-so-distant future, CinnaMoms can come together and dish around some of our favorite dishes. Sorry, I’m thinking about pie again.

Pies don’t have to be unhealthy right?

In the case word hasn’t reached you yet, WIC is currently offering a temporary increase in benefits for fruits and veggies during the summer months. $35 dollars for participants 12 months and older! It is a great time to shop for in-season fruits and vegetables and don’t forget your local farmer’s markets too!! WIC has lots of recipes available only a text away, including a recipe for zucchini muffins. If you’ve yet to try, you really are missing out!

CinnaChat

Since the beginning of the year, we have come together twice a month (only once in May) to share, support, and learn from each other, and from all of us to you, we offer a sincere thank you. June saw our largest group at 52 attendees! Congrats CinnaMoms!! So let’s keep it going! We can’t wait to see what else you have to share.

Let’s Talk Sleep

Asaiah Harville, IBCLC extraordinaire led our session focusing on sleep, or the lack thereof. Safe sleep is a major concern for new moms and making sure our babies are eating enough. So we looked at sleep functions and reducing the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). CinnaMoms also engaged in a discussion on the misleading notion that babies need to sleep through the night. Turns out, they really don’t. For those of you who may have never attended a CinnaMoms support group, it is a remarkable experience.

Either through the chatbox or voicing our concerns directly to the support group, CinnaMoms are encouraged to ask questions. Some of the questions addressed during this meeting were on waking up often, on the need to feed or sleep, what is natural or normal, and managing expectations and everyone else’s opinions. Our questions are heard at Cinnamoms, our concerns are discussed, behaviors explained and families, supported. Never has concern been dismissed with “its normal/he’ll grow out of it.”

What is your love language?

Kudos! To the wonderful Lydia Boyd and Rhonda Clayton for another fantastic presentation! Together they led the biggest group we’ve seen to date and on such an interesting and important topic. Love and the 5 Languages of Breastfeeding. They helped us identify how we give and receive love then made the connection to breastfeeding and breastfeeding support! *Mindblown* When we know who our people are, know how we each communicate love, we can better determine our ideal support. What better gift is there for a new mom than knowing how YOU want to be supported? The quiz listed in the link above is the same quiz we all took during our last meet-up and will help identify what love is to you. The truth is, we each communicate love differently and have different love needs. Now we have the tools to better understand one another and most importantly, ourselves.

A remarkable team comes together every month to help us through some of the most difficult times. So come, join us to share and learn with us. Let’s rebuild that village, for we are all in this together.

Thank you Asaiah, Thank you Rhonda, Lydia, CinnaMoms, and everyone working tirelessly behind the scenes.

I can’t wait for what else is in store.
